A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market.

从前，有一个男人和他的儿子一起赶着他们的驴子去市场。

As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: "You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

当他们在驴旁边走着的时候，一个乡下人从他们身边经过，他说：“你们两个傻瓜，驴除了让人骑还有什么用呢？”

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way.

But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

So the Man ordered his Boy toget off, and got on himself.

于是男人便叫儿子下来，自己骑了上去。

But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: " Shame onthat lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

但他们没走多远，又遇到两个妇人，其中一个妇人对另一个妇人说：“那个懒汉真丢脸，他居然让他可怜的小儿子步履艰难地走着。”

Well, the Man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey.

男人不知道该怎么办，但最后他让儿子骑到驴上，坐在自己前面。

By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them.

他们到镇上时，过路人开始嘲笑他们，对他们指指点点。

The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at.

男人停下来，问他们在嘲笑什么。

The men said: "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours and your hulking son?"

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do.

男人和儿子从驴上下来，想着该怎么办。

They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet toit, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders.

他们想了又想，最后砍下一根杆子，把驴蹄绑在上面，扛起了杆子和驴。

They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked outand caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole.

他们在所有遇到他们的人的笑声中继续往前走，直到他们来到市场桥，这时驴的一只蹄子松开了，一脚踢了出去，致使男孩松开了杆子的一端。

In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.

"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them:
