　　主角是史特列洛克，曾与潜行者『方』一同潜入过石棺，并且发现了黑石与变异区的秘密，并写下一份手稿，藏于皮里皮亚特的宾馆2楼26号方房。不过在伪装成黑石精英逃出时被发现，方被杀死了。史特列洛克把他安葬在纪念碑前，所以便有了『方的遗物』（你找到了吗？）。
　　手臂上的刺青是黑石组织派出的精英的标识，他们被派出核电站去阻止其他潜行者深入变异区北部。并且找到并摧毁史特列洛克的阵营。不过超级意识体没想到的是史特列洛克本人和方已经潜入了这批精英中，并且发现了黑石的秘密。在方死后，史特列洛克在一辆用于运送这批精英上的死亡卡车上发现许多人已经死去了，便杀死开车的黑石潜行者，并夺下卡车，疯狂逃出。之后就出现了开场动画中的那一幕.........

　　有一队冒险者，他们离发现我们并且发现真相只剩下一步之遥了，你的任务就是去杀了他们并且毁灭一切相关的证据。可是这当中发生了一个错误，那就是其中的一个正是你自己，我们也正在计算，为什么会出现这样的错误。”
　　S;“接下来？”
　　选择权在你，如果你选择加入我们，那么你就就会和超级意识合为一体，最终你的肉体或许会死去，但是你的意识会长存。如果你拒绝那么前面还有战斗等待着你，你将会死亡。。
　　Duty:希望永远不要开放Zone，以保护人民不受变异怪物及其他超自然力的影响。活动范围：ZONE外围
　　Freedom:希望开放Zone，把其中的秘密公之于众，认为ZONE里的东西应该全世界人共有。活动范围：ZONE外围（其实是进去的人都死了或者丧尸化了）
　　Military:阻止任何人进入ZONE，目的是保护政府实验不受影响，其实他们并不知道实验的真正目的。活动范围：大多数地区。

　　86年核电站炸了以后，ZONE地区中不断出现超自然现象，比如不稳定的引力场，幽灵，ARTIFACT,而且这里的环境很适合进行科学研究，偶然的实验中发现一种精神力可以控制人和动物，但对动物的效力远没对人的大，游戏中我们碰到的会把你拉过来推过去的大头怪物CONTROLER就是实验的产物，如果说政府就是为了制造这种生化士兵而封锁ZONE就太小儿科了，所谓的许愿机也不过是使人脑中产生幻觉而认为自己的愿望已经实现。这些都是实验的副产物，政府的真正目的是造出一个大型发射装置使这种精神力控制全世界所有的人。在X16中被玩家关掉的那个放在试管里的大脑子就是原型机，真正的机器在核电站的地下秘密研究室里，就是用你在旅馆中的到的解码器和文件解码后才能进去的地方，真结局的必备条件。要使这个机器发挥作用需要S.T.A.L.K.E.R.才行。

Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go.He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.
